Calculate distance in meters when you know longitude and latitude in java [duplicate]

Based on another question on stackoverflow, I got this code.. This calculates the result in meters, not in miles 🙂 public static float distFrom(float lat1, float lng1, float lat2, float lng2) { double earthRadius = 6371000; //meters double dLat = Math.toRadians(lat2-lat1); double dLng = Math.toRadians(lng2-lng1); double a = Math.sin(dLat/2) * Math.sin(dLat/2) + Math.cos(Math.toRadians(lat1)) * Math.cos(Math.toRadians(lat2)) … Read more

Calculating distance between two geographic locations

http://developer.android.com/reference/android/location/Location.html Look into distanceTo Returns the approximate distance in meters between this location and the given location. Distance is defined using the WGS84 ellipsoid. or distanceBetween Computes the approximate distance in meters between two locations, and optionally the initial and final bearings of the shortest path between them. Distance and bearing are defined using the … Read more

Java double vs BigDecimal for latitude/longitude

Using double has enough precision for accurate lat/lon down to inches for 6-7 decimal places. In aviation, if decimal degrees are used, they typically go to at least 7 decimal places. In our NASA simulations, lat/lon data are doubles while all other attitude and altitude are floats. In other words, the 6th decimal place for … Read more

Algorithm to find all Latitude Longitude locations within a certain distance from a given Lat Lng location

Start by Comparing the distance between latitudes. Each degree of latitude is approximately 69 miles (111 kilometers) apart. The range varies (due to the earth’s slightly ellipsoid shape) from 68.703 miles (110.567 km) at the equator to 69.407 (111.699 km) at the poles. The distance between two locations will be equal or larger than the … Read more

What’s the best way to store co-ordinates (longitude/latitude, from Google Maps) in SQL Server?

Fair Warning! Before taking the advice to use the GEOGRAPHY type, make sure you are not planning on using Linq or Entity Framework to access the data because it’s not supported (as of November 2010) and you will be sad! Update Jul 2017 For those reading this answer now, it is obsolete as it refers … Read more
