Since PHP 5.1.0, file_put_contents() supports writing piece-by-piece by passing a stream-handle as the $data parameter: file_put_contents(“Tmpfile.zip”, fopen(“http://someurl/file.zip”, ‘r’)); From the manual: If data [that is the second argument] is a stream resource, the remaining buffer of that stream will be copied to the specified file. As WMR mentioned, org.apache.commons.io.IOUtils from Apache has a method called copy(InputStream,OutputStream) which does exactly what you’re looking for. So, you have: InputStream in; OutputStream out; IOUtils.copy(in,out); in.close(); out.close(); …in your code. Is there a reason you’re avoiding IOUtils?

I would use a ByteArrayOutputStream. And on finish you can call: new String( baos.toByteArray(), codepage ); or better: baos.toString( codepage ); For the String constructor, the codepage can be a String or an instance of java.nio.charset.Charset. A possible value is java.nio.charset.StandardCharsets.UTF_8. The method toString() accepts only a String as a codepage parameter (stand Java 8).
