I know its a bit late answer but for future generations – this is how its done: Click on Window > Customize perspective > Command Groups Availability tab. Check the “Android SDK and AVD Manager” option and hit the OK button.
Open Android Studio and under the Tools you will find the AVD manager. Click on it and ensure that you have a valid virtual device with the SDK downloaded (click “download” in the Actions column if shown). Then ensure that the correct virtual device is selected on the toolbar.

First you need to enable USB debugging on your phone, then connect it to your computer via USB. Then eclipse should automatically start debugging on your phone instead of the AVD.
It is because you are connect to a network which has a auto-redirect in it or it is not encrypted(HTTP). Start by Disconnecting yourself from the network. Restarting Android Studio If the problem continues try posting a more detailed description of the error If the problem doesn’t continue contact your network administrator.

In the advanced settings of a virtual device in Android Studio 1.0.2 AVD Manager, there is actually a checkbox that allows to enable keyboard input without editing the config.ini by hand. Tools → Android → AVD Manager → pencil icon (shown in picture) → Show Advanced Settings (scroll to bottom) → Enable Keyboard Input
