React: validateDOMNesting: #text cannot appear as a child of

The problem is the spaces in this line:

return <tr key={item.id}> {cells} </tr>;

It might seem silly, but you’re actually rendering the cells and some whitespace (i.e. text). It should look like this:

return <tr key={item.id}>{cells}</tr>;
