Renaming or deleting the VS profile folder in the AppData profile directory fixed the issue for me. You might prefer renaming in case you have a lot of extensions installed if this solution does not resolve the issue and would like to revert by renaming the folder back. I don’t really like answering my own question but I found the RestartStudio extension for Visual Studio 2010 that adds the restart option to the File menu and seems to work well.

The MRU list just moved for VS 2015. It’s still stored in the registry, it’s just in a different place. Open regedit and delete the items in: Recent Projects HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\MRUItems\{a9c4a31f-f9cb-47a9-abc0-49ce82d0b3ac}\Items Recent Files HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\MRUItems\{01235aad-8f1b-429f-9d02-61a0101ea275}\Items Restart Visual Studio and that should do it.

The command name is Edit.NavigateTo. In VS 2015 RC the default keyboard shortcut to it is still Ctrl + , in the Global scope.
In your project folder find the hidden .vs folder and delete it. This solved the problem for me.
