Mockito test a void method throws an exception

The parentheses are poorly placed.

You need to use:

doThrow(new Exception()).when(mockedObject).methodReturningVoid(...);
                                          ^

and NOT use:

doThrow(new Exception()).when(mockedObject.methodReturningVoid(...));
                                                                   ^
