Node in my experience runs fine in cygwin, what Node usually has EINVAL errors in seems to be MINTTY which is a terminal emulation ‘skin’ that is default to cygwin. The best alternative I found is Gow (Gnu On Windows). It’s a lightweight alternative to Cygwin, about 10 times lighter. As far as I know the 130 tools installed with Gow are regular Win32 applications.

If you just want to compile ProtoBuf definitions, you can download precompiled binaries of protoc for all platforms right on the ProtoBuf GitHub releases page. They had precompiled binaries at least since 2015, but it’s easy to overlook them in between the many downloads.
