As @evi pointed out there is a bug in advanced profiling. For now disabling it (Edit configuration settings -> Profiling -> Enable advanced profiling) prevents EditText from crashing Update: Fix released in Android Studio 3.1.1 Advanced profiling available once again!

My solution is simple, don’t look at the error notification in Build – Run tasks (which should be Execution failed for task ‘:app:compileDebugJavaWithJavac’) Just fix all errors in the Java Compiler section below it.
Close the project and import it again. Worked for me today.
Solution Close Android Studio Go to C:\Users\UserName\.android and rename the build-cache folder to build-cache.bak Go to C:\Users\UserName\.AndroidStudio3.2\system and rename these folders caches to caches.bak compile-server to compile-server.bak compiler to compiler.bak conversion to conversion.bak external_build_system to external_build_system.bak frameworks to frameworks.bak gradle to gradle.bak resource_folder_cache to resource_folder_cache.bak Open the Android Studio and open your project again.
Exit Studio. Delete .idea/ (seems to me that’s most important), build/, app/build directories. Start Studio Set Settings -> Build -> Gradle settings back (last stable Gradle local distribution in my case). Clean&rebuild project. Helps me.
To solve the issue, remove Instant App Provision from the “Run Configurations” and leave only the Gradle-Aware Make. Run -> Edit Configurations.. I have AndroidStudio 3.1, Gradle Plugin 3.1.0 and Kotlin library version 1.2.30.
