JavaScript alert not working in Android WebView

As others indicated, setting the WebChromeClient is needed to get alert() to work. It’s sufficient to just set the default WebChromeClient():

mWebView.getSettings().setJavaScriptEnabled(true);
mWebView.setWebChromeClient(new WebChromeClient());
