D3.js: “Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ILLEGAL”?

Try specifying the UTF-8 charset on the HTML host document :

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF8">

D3 contains UTF-8 symbols (like π) invalids in non-UTF8 documents.
