Try list comprehension and string.strip()

>>> mystr.split('\n')
['L1', 'L2', '', 'L3', 'L4', ' ', '', 'L5']
>>> [line for line in mystr.split('\n') if line.strip()]
['L1', 'L2', 'L3', 'L4', 'L5']
